A headline price for overnight delivery rarely tells you what you will actually pay. Weight, box size, where the parcel goes and which service you choose all change the bill. Here is what drives the cost and how to keep it under control.
1. Weight
Carriers price in weight bands. A parcel just over a band boundary can cost noticeably more than one just under it, so it pays to weigh accurately and trim packaging where you can.
2. Size and volumetric weight
Carriers charge for the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight, which is calculated from the parcel's dimensions. A light but bulky parcel can be charged as if it were heavy. Try our volumetric weight calculator to see how your parcels will be charged.
3. Delivery area
Some postcodes, such as remote areas, islands and some rural locations, cost more to reach. Domestic mainland deliveries are generally cheaper than these.
4. Service level
Standard next-day, timed services, Saturday delivery and signature options all carry different prices. Choose the speed you actually need for each parcel, not the fastest one by default.
5. Surcharges
Carriers can add surcharges for items such as fuel, oversize or non-standard parcels, and address corrections. Read the small print and ask which apply. For more, see fuel surcharges and nine ways to cut shipping costs.
6. Volume
The more you send, the better your leverage. A business account with regular collections usually beats retail pay-as-you-go rates.
7. Packaging
Right-sizing boxes cuts material, void fill and carrier charges all at once. A small range of well-chosen cartons usually works better than one size for everything.
