Calculated using the standard UK road courier divisor of 5000 (L × W × H in cm ÷ 5000 = volumetric kg). Air freight and some international services may use a different divisor — check with your carrier for cross-border shipments.

Why it matters

Why couriers charge volumetric weight

A large, light parcel — like a lampshade or a box of soft toys — takes up just as much space in a van as a smaller, heavier one. Couriers charge based on whichever is greater: the actual weight on the scales, or the volumetric weight worked out from the parcel's dimensions. That's called the billable weight, and it's what actually appears on your invoice.

If you're shipping bulky, lightweight products regularly, understanding volumetric weight helps you price your own shipping correctly and avoid surprise invoice adjustments from your carrier.

FAQs

Common questions

What is volumetric weight?
Volumetric (or dimensional) weight is a pricing method couriers use for large, lightweight parcels. It's calculated from a parcel's length, width and height rather than its actual weight, because bulky items take up van and lorry space regardless of how light they are.
How do I calculate volumetric weight?
Multiply length × width × height in centimetres, then divide by 5000 (the standard UK road courier divisor) to get the volumetric weight in kilograms. Couriers charge based on whichever is higher: the actual weight or the volumetric weight.
Why was I charged more than my parcel's actual weight?
If your parcel is large but light, its volumetric weight can be higher than its actual weight. Couriers charge for whichever figure is greater, known as the billable weight, since a bulky parcel still takes up the same space in a van as a heavier, denser one.
Does this apply to same-day courier and pallet deliveries too?
Yes — volumetric weight principles apply across same-day courier, overnight parcels and pallet distribution, though pallet networks typically use their own space-based pricing bands. Call 0116 444 0444 if you're unsure how your consignment will be charged.
