Most 3PLs look similar on the surface. Here's what to actually dig into before you commit to a fulfilment partner.
Many 3PLs require 500+ orders per month before they'll take you on. If you're growing but not there yet, this locks you out of professional fulfilment entirely. Always ask about minimums upfront. Reilly's has none.
What's the cut-off time? And what happens to orders placed after cut-off? Same-day despatch is increasingly the customer expectation — confirm the cut-off time in writing before you sign anything.
Does the 3PL connect directly to your Shopify, Amazon, TikTok Shop? The answer should be "yes, via API — orders sync automatically." If they mention CSV uploads or manual processing, walk away.
Ask for a fully itemised quote: storage, pick and pack, carrier cost, returns, inbound handling. Some 3PLs add peak surcharges, account fees or minimum monthly charges that don't appear in the headline rate.
Warehouse location directly affects delivery speeds and carrier costs. A central UK location (like Lutterworth, Leicestershire) gives consistent next-day delivery to 95%+ of UK postcodes — better than a warehouse in the north or south.
Any reputable 3PL will welcome a warehouse visit before you commit. If they're reluctant, that's a red flag. Seeing the operation in person tells you more than any sales pitch.
